A  Saturday trip to the mall

I took my youngest son to the mall yesterday to buy some clothes as a birthday gift. I was ovewhelmed by what I experienced. loud noises (music) blared from stores. Sellers stopped you at every corner wanting you to try their lotions, cell phones, perfumes, electronical toys, whatever. In the stores the clerks were quick to welcome you and show you the items that were there.  It was an enviroment geared toward "buy this and be happy.' The mall was packed- as I expected it would be on a Saturday. Customers buying stuff at every turn. It made me stop and think about what our world has become- we as a people have been fed the lie that you must have the newest and greatest whatever to be happy whether it be a new game, car, perfume, lotion, ipod etc. In the long run it does not really bring us happiness. may be right then it does- but the newness wears off and the next best  thing is offered up and our bank accounts dwindle down. What is missing in our lives that we as  society as come to the point. I  have been quilty of this as well. Buying something because it is new and wonderful. I have made a decision not to chase what is new- I stop and think Do I need this before buying anything.- so I dont have a I phone--I dont need it- I dont have a new car (mine is old but it runs and is paid for). I dont have a flat screen (my TV works fine).
I am trying to seek what truly is important in my life and no just load up with stuff. We were not put on earth to be collectors of things but to be there for each other. I am making an effort to spend my time and money on people not things. I am not saying geting new stuff is wrong and I think we should treat ourselves at times- but I think our society has lost perspective on what is important.
